Inspired to Aspire Mentoring


’Inspired to Aspire: Mentoring’ aims to develop the skills, attitudes and qualities of high school students by linking them with mentors from local businesses. Through a series of meetings with business volunteers, the aspirations of students will be broadened and their inspiration to aim high and succeed will increase.

Mentors from companies in the Greater Manchester area are leading a combination of inspirational group mentoring sessions for 12 to 14 year olds (school years 8 and 9) and focused individual mentoring sessions for 14 to 15 year olds (school year 10). By July 2018, 972 students from schools in Salford, Trafford and Bury will have taken part in the project.

The mentoring sessions comprise of interactive activities and discussions covering some of the essential skills needed to be effective at school, in life and at work. These include communication, team-building, setting goals, presentational skills, problem solving and resilience.

The structured seven-session group programme has been developed with the guidance of businesses and schools and each of the business volunteers then personalises the programme, to include their own life and work experiences. This provides a unique and individualised programme both for the students and for the mentors. Full training and support is given to the business volunteers, both in advance of and during the programme.

The project enables sustainable partnerships to be developed between businesses and schools, whilst enabling and inspiring large groups of young people to prepare for their future place within the world of work.

Through the success of the programme since its launch in February 2017, the programme has been delivered by many fantastic businesses and partners including JD Sports, John Lewis, BDO LLP, McDonalds, Premier Inn and many more.
