STEER

STEER is an Early Intervention and Prevention programme currently funded by Greater Manchester Combined Authority, and 7 Local Authority partners in Greater Manchester. The programme aligns with GMCA VRU strategy to end youth violence. Young people aged 10-17 in Greater Manchester are given a “second chance” to change their behaviour and reduce their risk of offending.

Support is aimed at young people aged 10-17 and who are at risk of involvement in violent crime because they have an association with peers or family member(s) involved in serious violence, organised crime or gangs and who consent to participate in the programme.

Key interventions include:

  • aspirations and goal setting.
  • relationship mapping.
  • safety planning.
  • attitudes, thinking and behaviours.
  • criminal exploitation.
  • emotional control and anger management.

Youth Workers provide 6 months intensive, coaching, mentoring and advocacy support within a multi-agency safeguarding framework.

The programme is delivered at home, in school and community settings across Greater Manchester in a safe and confidential space for young people.

Over the past three years STEER has been externally evaluated by our evaluation partners Cordis Bright and early signs show STEER as a credible mentoring model working with this cohort of young people.

Steer Salford Case Study

Matty

Matty was referred to our service due to concerns around his involvement in local gangs, anti-social behaviour and his violent nature in school and within the community.

STEER provides one to one mentoring for young people at risk of serious youth violence. The service uses positive activities to steer young people down a legitimate path helping to improve resilience, motivation and reducing risk-taking behaviours.

Since beginning the STEER mentoring sessions, Matty has not been involved in any major incidents. Matty’s school have also commented on his improvement, stating that he’s on his way to achieving some really good grades!

Matty’s mentoring sessions will continue to ensure that he successfully enrols on to an apprenticeship or college course, and to ensure his positive relationship with his family continues.
