Skills Builder- NCS

Our Life Ready team had an exciting opportunity from April 2023- April 2025 to support young people aged 16-17 to feel prepared for employability and feel confident in enhancing their own skills.

The Skills Builder initiative offered young people workshops to become world-ready and work-ready. Skills Builder did this by developing their confidence, resilience, and well-being; connecting them with people from all walks of life; and empowering them to make a difference in their communities and wider society.

The project implemented fun and engaging sessions following the Skills Builder framework, focusing on the eight essential skills that underpinned individual success at each stage in life and supported all young people in developing their independence.

This project was:

  • Aimed at 16 and 17 year olds
  • Fully funded by National Citizen Service
  • A minimum of 16 hours of workshops and sessions
  • Youth-led classroom social action
  • During lesson or extracurricular time

The themes covered through skills builder sessions are:

  • Employability
  • Health & Well-being
  • Life Skills
  • Social Action & Volunteering

Skills Builder Opportunities

The Skills Builder team supported 863 young people through 50,800 hours of activities, out of the 60,000 activity hours offered. We encouraged young people to try something different, meet new people, step outside their comfort zones, and develop their skills. During the half-term and summer holidays, we provided residential opportunities at a university in Manchester and organised a range of FREE activities for them to get involved in. They had the opportunity to meet businesses, work with others from their community, and truly make a difference in their local area.
